McAfee is a global leader in internet and computer security, and they have a wide range of products created for small businesses, large enterprise businesses, and individual consumers.
Since the needs of each of those groups are vastly different, McAfee has set up individual websites for each category of products to save you time and prevent confusion when shopping. Today we are taking a look at McAfee AntiVirus Plus(www.mcafee.com/mav/retailcard) which offers their basic level of consumer protection software for personal computers.
Once you find your way to the McAfee consumer website, you can browse products tailored for PCs, Macs, mobile devices, and all-in-one software that covers all of the above categories. They also have a bunch of free tools and trials of their premium products so you could do everything from scan your computer for a virus to get a 30 day trial of their software without ever opening your wallet.
The distinction line between the simple antivirus software and full-fledged security suite has been continuously evaporating as vendors nowadays offer all the security features with even entry level security software. The typical example of this latest shift in trend is the MacAfee AntiVirus Plus 2014, which is presently offered at $69.99 for three licenses. This suit of security software includes an impressive firewall apart from other useful security options. In various tests, this MacAfee security program has been found very effective in blocking malware attacks.
Antivirus is essential for a computer. There was a time people used Linux and Mac machines without the fear of getting affected by viruses. But today, you can’t trust any computer.
Viruses are being created day by day. Intelligent programmers create efficient viruses to steal your personal and banking credentials. So, using your computer without an antivirus is like digging a pit of death for yourself.
There are many antivirus tools available today. Each company has a marketing term. So they market the product with catchy features, and we fall into their traps. It is only after the purchase; we get to know that there is nothing new in it. Don’t worry this time. You will not be falling into anyone’s trap. Today, I am here to share details of useful security utility, which is McAfee Antivirus Plus.

User Interface (UI)
The main window of this MacAfee software is in fact a large panel which takes the users to four important functions of the software including Virus and Spyware Protection, Web and Email Protection, McAfee Updates, and Subscription. The smaller panels on the window lead to the Data Protection, Backup and PC and Home Network Tools. However, this display is marginally misleading as the suite doesn’t actually feature ‘Backup’ and after clicking the link “firewall and anti-spam settings” you will discover that anti-spam is also not offered with this software. To enjoy these features, you need to buy the actual full-on security suite of McAfee.
CleanBoot to the Rescue
The CleanBoot technology used with the McAfee AntiVirus Plux 2014 enables the program detect infections effectively. By scanning the PC through the CleanBoot feature, the software could find more infections than ever. This feature is important because the bootable rescue systems offered by vendors earlier ran in retro text-mode and a subsequent full scan of the PC found the traces that were missed by the bootable rescue systems.
CleanBoot feature of the suite seems to possess the capability for fighting malware. This is the one component of the security program that makes it special among other antivirus programs from McAfee. It is usually packaged in a bootable format that works along with the traditional malware. So this is to make your PC doubly protected from malware. Experts maintain the view that you should run a CleanBoot scan before installing McAfee security program if you are not sure whether the PC is entirely clean from malware or viruses or not.
Reliable malware removal
During lab tests, this new McAfee Security Plus 2014 has shown tremendous capabilities to block malware. During the test, a full scan was conducted on all malware-infested systems and it was found capable of blocking most of the malware threats. However, it was not able to remove all the executable threats that remained on the PC even after a full scan was run. Overall, it has shown a 75 percent detection rate and 5.9 points overall for cleanup. With this performance, it finds its place in the middle of the rating scale.
Clean and Elegant Design
User Interface is not complicated, and it will not confuse you. I am very sure that McAfee’s user interface designers were worked smart to come up with such an elegant design.
On the homepage, you can see a green security status stripe just below the title bar. The bottom portion is divided into four squares and two rectangles.
Four squares feature Virus and Spyware Protection, Web and Email Protection, McAfee Updates, and Your Subscription. If everything is okay with these four, a tick mark can be seen underneath the title.
Two rectangles are the gateway to additional tools (Data Protection and Backup, PC, and Home Network Tools).
There is a right pane of options two sections. The top part gives you three links to Home, Navigation, and Help. Bottom section gives you the time of next scheduled scan. Beneath that, you can access security report.
Navigation gives you a task oriented list of tools. You can search for the needed one inside it.
Malicious Website Blocker
Websites are the inevitable part of any regular internet user. But there are tons of malicious websites available on the web. Sometimes, we become victims of online scams like phishing. Hackers are very smart than official developers.
No manual method is available for this purpose. Why because eyes can lie when it comes to the internet. McAfee Antivirus Plus’s URL Blocker is something you should try out if you are living with a fear of malicious websites.
McAfee gives you the accurate rating based on the reliability of a website if you turn on Site Advisor.
Efficient Scanner and Extra Options : www.mcafee.com/mav/retailcard
Malware scanner is something an antivirus tool can’t avoid. McAfee Antivirus comes with an intelligent scanner that surely catches vulnerability.
Click on Virus and Spyware Protection from the home window. You will see something like the image given below. The first option enables you to perform a Full or Custom virus scan. The second one is Real- time scanning which simultaneously monitor files when you open or modify them. Scheduled Scans is something you need to automate the scanning process.
McAfee Antivirus is a longstanding program that has been around for many years, protecting computers and their users. With their new McAfee Antivirus Plus , this company takes another stab at the market by improving many of its older features and adding some interesting new ones. While some people have expressed problems with McAfee in the past—especially in 2010, when an update accidentally made the McAfee program think a Windows file was a virus, causing many Windows computers to enter a reboot loop—this company has always done its best to protect computers and correct any mistakes it made. After being acquired by Intel in 2011, McAfee has shown considerably more power in the antivirus sector. You should notice this upgrade too after noting their new program’s features.
The search feature is incredibly helpful, because you never know when a virus will come up from a random website, and the “Active Protection” feature gives you ease of mind. If you choose this program, you should get a lot of use out of it.
McAfee AntiVirus Plus is practically a mini-suite, with firewall, phishing protection, and a variety of bonus features. It’s not quite an Editors’ Choice, but it’s definitely an effective tool.
With phishing protection and a top-notch firewall joined to essential antivirus protection, McAfee AntiVirus Plus could serve as a bare-bones security suite (as long as you don’t need parental control or spam filtering). Its collection of bonus tools like QuickClean, shredder, and My Home Network just make it seem more suite-like. McAfee did earn an excellent score in my malware-blocking test, but other products have rated better with the independent labs.
